Among other parameters, this regulatory framework forces the development and application of technologies related to the NOx reduction that are sent out to the atmosphere as a subproduct of combustion processes. One of the exponents of these technologies is the selective catalytic reduction (SCR).

SCR in depth: the NOx reduction leading technology
The way this leading technology works consists in generating a catalytic reaction which uses a reductant to convert oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water. Due to the required higher DeNOx efficiency, a lot of efforts have recently been concentrated on the optimization of the SCR systems for broadening the active DeNOx temperature window as widely as possible, especially at low temperatures, enhancing the catalysts durability and reducing the cost of the DeNOx system.
On industrial installations, SCR catalysts are generally installed along with an ammonia system to use this gas as reductant. The system sprays ammonia, typically stored as aqueous ammonia, anhydrous ammonia, or a urea solution, into the exhaust stream. The ammonia adsorbs onto the SCR catalyst, where it reacts with NOx and oxygen to form nitrogen and water. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a reaction product when urea is used as the reductant. Typical NOx reduction is among 70-95%.
Engelhard Corporation patented the SCR with ammonia as reductant in 1957 in the US. Further development was made in Japan and the US in the early 1960’s focusing on cheaper and more durable catalyst agents. The first large-scale SCR facility was installed in 1978 by IHI Corporation.
Typical uses of commercial SCR systems are found on industrial boilers, utility boilers and municipal solid waste boilers. Further applications include diesel marine engines, diesel locomotives, gas turbines, and even automobiles (AdBlue).
