Construction methods

Concrete chimneys are built using one of two available forming methods, slipform and jumpform. 

Slipform construction is well suited to chimneys that are very tall or have very large diameters, and on projects with accelerated schedules. With this method, concrete is poured continuously into a single form that is steadily elevated (or slipped) to create the concrete column. An integrated hydraulic jacking system raises the formwork, controls the shell taper and wall thickness, and uses lasers to constantly monitor alignment. The slipform method is labor intensive, with work performed on an around-the-clock basis.

Jumpform construction relies on more traditional concrete forming techniques to build the shell on an incremental basis. Dominion E&C uses state-of-the-art technology to make our jumpform system an extremely efficient construction method.

Liners & Ductwork

Flue liner material is an important consideration in concrete chimney design. Varying flue gas environments require the selection of proper materials to ensure the longevity of the entire stack structure. We have built numerous liner systems using carbon steel, stainless steel, C-276 nickel alloy, fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP), borosilicate glass block and acid block.

The importance of stack & chimney inspections

Regular inspections of power plant equipment play an important role in identifying potential maintenance and repair issues, and are key to performing repairs in a cost effective and timely manner. Inspections and maintenance are critical to the equipment as well as the safety of your plant personnel, as neglect may lead to severe deterioration and equipment failure.

Our experienced team of engineers and skilled construction experts have developed detailed inspection and maintenance programs for all types of stacks and chimneys. We’re able to evaluate the current condition of the structure to determine if the life of the stack can be extended, modified and utilized for another purpose, or if it needs to be demolished.

Inspection methods

In addition to traditional stack inspection methods, we offer state of the art inspection techniques and services.

Hot Camera

This method allows internal inspections to be completed while a unit is online, or when conditions are too hazardous or dangerous for personnel. The system is comprised of digital cameras which are enclosed and protected inside a thermally balanced housing which can take still photographs and HD quality video.

Thermographic Inspection

Thermal imaging works by detecting the heat signature being radiated by objects, and requires absolutely zero light. Since thermal imagers only look at heat, they are totally unaffected by light sources. Thermography is beneficial by reducing unscheduled outages, detecting problem areas more quickly without interrupting service, and allowing facilities to assess priorities for corrective action. This system also keeps the user out of danger, especially with live components that cannot be touched. Thermography does not intrude upon or affect the structure.

UAS Inspection (Unmanned Aircraft Systems)

UAS technology allows for the ability to manually control a flight mission to follow and film at the same time. The advantages of using this technology are reduction in service costs, safety factors involved with high rope activity, faster turn-around time, and a more thorough and comprehensive system. UAS systems can capture areas of concern or general conditions in HD video or high resolution digital images. By using a UAS system, we can inspect your structure live, capturing high resolution stills or HD video.

Demolition services

Dominion E&C provides partial or complete demolition services for reinforced concrete chimneys.

When a stack or chimney has reached the end of its intended life or is severely deteriorated it may require complete demolition. Our team of highly skilled chimney technicians can perform demolition services in tight locations without damaging surrounding buildings, equipment, and to ensure the safety of on-site personnel. In addition to safety we understand both cost and schedule are critical for our clients. Our innovative engineers and creative construction teams will work together to achieve these goals.
